The Story so far:

Parts of the German army "Nord" is garrisoned in a small mining town called Kiruna in the northern parts of Sweden. It's location above the polar circle makes it perfect for testing armour and Mecha prototypes in extreme cold so the Germans built their second largest armour factory called "Valhalla" just outside of town. Newly manufactured Mecha and Super heavy tank prototypes are sent to Kiruna on a regular basis from the Nibelungenwerk in the Austrian town of Saint Valentin for testing in snowy conditions.

tn_P7300015.jpgtn_P7300018.jpgThe importance of the Kiruna for the Wehrmacht was great. The British commandos had been spying on Kiruna for months, and the Russians had massed part of their armies along the Swedish-Finnish border. As autumn turned into winter and snow and extreme cold began to tighten its grip on the northern parts of Scandinavia, the Russian high command green lighted the Swedish invasion. The date was set to the 14th October 1940. This message was intercepted by British intelligence, and the Allied commanders agreed that a small commando unit should cross the Norwegian border and raid the Kiruna research and testing facilities for blueprints of the new prototypes before they  fell into Soviet hands.

As the Soviet artillery started pounding the German defenders, the British commandos saw aqn opportunity and sprung a raiding mission while the Germans were confused and scattered all over town. However, before the British commandos could reach the Valhalla factory German sappers detonated highly explosive charges, burying prototypes and blueprints beneath the smoking rubble.

The German defenders found themselves separated from each other, one half facing the British commandos, the other half faced the Soviet armoured divisions. To save themselves from certain death, both halves agree to ally and fight with their new "masters" - and so the war took yet another weird turn.

One townsperson later described the battle as a confused "free for all".

Mission: Search and Recover

tn_P7300025.jpgAfter the destruction of the Valhalla factory site, alien life forms that had been kept in one of the labs somehow survived, and escaped.

Neither Soviet nor British commanders had seen anything like it before, and thinking that these aliens would appease their superiors for the loss of prototypes and blueprints, both sides concentrated their efforts on capturing the creatures.

Victory conditions:

Capture the alien objectives or force the enemy to retreat.

Special Rule:

One of the alien life forms is scared and confused - he will begin to move D6" in a random direction starting on Turn 2.

TURN 1
German-Russian side wins the Initiative

German-Russian side orders in Drop Troopers

tn_P7300007.jpgThe Russian artillery stopped it's bombardment of Kiruna and the anxious defenders peeked from their foxholes towards the fields outside of town. A loud "URRAH" heralded  the Soviet assault. A RG Panzer IV ploughed through the deep snow. The commander spotted the approaching enemy vampire in mist form, and ordered his gunner to aim and fire. The shot missed the unnatural mist, and the crew instead concentrated all machine/gun tire on a building where enemy units were hiding. One enemy soldier was killed.

Meanwhile a R.A.T. mecha jumped out of its hiding place and fired its HMG at the RG Aufklarer squad inflicting 2 casualties and 1 wounded Aufklarar. Having watched the Panzer IV at work a BC HMG team fired a concentrated salvo at the same building successfully killing another soldier. The men in the house started to panic from all the crossfire and became disorganised, even though the nearby BG Lieutenant should have provided higher leadership! The BG Lieutenant quickly ordered his Sergeant to fire his Panzerfaust at the enemy Panzer IV tank but the pressure was too high and the projectile missed its target.

Having kept their head cool, the RC Aufklarer squad ignored the R.A.T and instead fired at the BG Rifle squad in a ruin across the street. One of the pot-shots hit an unsuspecting British soldier and he dropped him dead to the ground. The BC Vampire slipped into the enemy Panzer IV tank through their ventilation system. At the same time a BG Sniper took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger of his sniper rifle. The bullet hit the enemy medic - so much for the Geneva convention! Fumbling through the snow Russian zombies moved against the. British positions.  Wasting no time the British fire team fired their guns and succeeded in killing 2 Zombies. The other fire team targeted the same zombie unit, killing 2 more zombies and inflicting 1 down.

tn_P7300028.jpgtn_P7300026.jpgAs Russian soldiers move into the nearby ruins BG Aufklarer troops crawled through the forest to get close enough to fire their MP47's. A sudden burst of fire from the forest scattered the Russian soldiers into cover. The little skirmish left 1 Russian dead and 2 men wounded. On the opposite end of the field Russian troops fired at a large 3 story building in which the British troops had holed up. The Russians fired into every window and killed 1 British soldier and wounded 2 others. A Russian soldier aimed his rifle and fired a rifle grenade that exploded in the chest of the British packed Vickers operator. Continuing their onslaught the Russian troops moved closer and fired their SMGs at the same building, killing yet another British soldier.

Amidst the confusion, German Drop Troopers successfully landed near the enemy GB command and the disorganised grenadier squad. Wasting no time they hurled grenades into the building, and screams and explosions erupted, resulting in 2 men dead (including the Sergeant with the Panzerfaust). Three others were left severeIy wounded. A British sniper covered the assault of Black Jack, and he inflicted a headshot on an enemy Mecha Rifle but the remaining Russians succeeded in bringing Black Jack DOWN. With Black Jack DOWN, the Russian RPC firewas able to fire a rocket at the British soldiers in the house. The resulting explosion brought down 1 floor and killed 1 man and wounded another.

tn_P7300012.jpgStill unsuspecting, the crew of the RG Panzer IV rotated the turret and aimed for the British R.A.T. The projectile hit one of the legs but failed to do any damage. After that the crew fired all their machine guns at their favourite target - the ruin with a holed up enemy platoon, wounding 2 soldiers as the machinegun swept from side to side of the ruin. At the same time, Black Jack stood up again and brushed dirt away from his uniform. He then spotted the Russian squad responsible for his knockout and charged them. Upon seeing him, the Russians chose to withdraw but soon found themselves fleeing and disorganised....

Turn 2 :
Russian-German side wins Initiative

Alien moves 1" towards Russian side.
Moving through the smoke, debris, and dead bodies, the BG Grenadiers stumbled out of the ruins and aimed their guns at the enemy Drop Troopers, catching them off guard. Before the Drop Troopers had a chance to react the small arms fire killed 2 of them and wounded another member of their squad. In return the surviving Drop Troops wielding packed LMG46's successfully suppressed the remaining enemy grenadiers in the ruin. The British troops grew tired of not being able to spot the enemy in the ruins, and decide to suppress the whole building instead to make the enemy Sniper and Mech Rifle team keep their heads down.

Russian Mech rifles failed to hit the R.A.T., and thus the mecha once again fired at the pesky enemy Aufklarers, this time killing 2 and wounding 1. The BG command squad peeked out of the ruin and saw the enemy Para Drop troopers standing just outside. The Lieutenant and his remaining staff managed to bring down yet another one of the heavily armoured soldiers leaving 1 wounded squad member left to fend for himself.

As the Russians continued to flee away from Black Jack, and Black Jack continued to chase them other Russians turn their attention towards him. The Russian RPG Squad fired their rocket against him and scored a direct hit, tearing his body to pieces and leaving a smoking crater in the snow.

tn_P7300024.jpgRussian soldiers in the ruin jumped out of their cover and threw grenades at the BG Aufklarer squad in the forest nearby. The Aufklarer managed to hurl one of the grenades back and the explosions on both sides killed the remaining Aufklarers and 2 Russian soldiers, leaving 1 Russian soldier wounded. True "eye for an eye". The BC Vampire materialised inside the Panzer IV and started a brawl with the crew, managing to slit the neck of the crewmen before a lucky thrust with a knife hit him in the heart. The shocked crew miraculously not only survived the vampire attack but also managed to kill the beast.

Turn 3 :
German-British forces win Initiative

Alien moves 1" back the way it came.
The R.A.T. powered up and ran towards a Russian mecha rifle, managing to crash into one of the Russian soldiers and kill him. Not wasting time the machine turned and fired its HMG at another enemy squad cutting down no less than 3 soldiers. In the ruins to the east the BG Grenadiers managed to kill the last enemy Para Drop troopers (an enemy HMG team) but while doing so they exposed themselves to the RG enemy HMG. Firing their rifles along with the HMG the soldiers managed to suppress their opponent in the ruins.

tn_P7300044.jpgThe fleeing Russians finally reached cover and stopped there. As they regained their breath they glanced towards the stomping R.A.T mecha just in time to see one of its legs getting blown off by a Russian RPG. The behemoth toppled over and a British crew member jumped out of the cockpit. He didn't get far as the remaining RG Grenadiers cut him down with their MP47's. The British rifle squad, or what remained of it, watched as the enemy Zombie horde moved ever closer. Not wanting to take the risk of being overrun, they fired into the mob, resulting in 2 killed and 1 down zombie.

tn_P7300031.jpgWith explosions and screams all around him one British sniper was able to keep a cool head long enough to aim and fire his rifle. He successfully killed a Russian sniper lurking in a window of the opposing building. The Panzer IV swung its turret and aimed for the building with the enemy grenadiers, but missed. Responding to the wounded the BC medic left his hiding place inside the ruin and squatted down beside two wounded men out in the open behind the ruins.

Turn 4
German-British forces win Initiative

Alien moves 3" towards russian side

Seeing that the battle wss lost the German-British side started to load their wounded onto waiting trucks and prepared to withdraw. What little remained on the German-British side made a last stand . A British sniper aimeds for the enemy mecha rifle team but missed. Two BG fired at the Russians - one shot missed but the other hit and killed the enemy sergeant. BG grenadiers fired at the enemy zombies near the alien objective but failed to hit a single one!

Moving a bit closer the Panzer IV fired everything towards the ruins where BG troops remained but without much result. Russian soldiers in the ruins fired at the same target, and the barrage of small arms fire against the surface of the ruins hit and killed a panicking German soldier.

The BG Lieutenant signalled for his troops to fall back, but his waving arm just attracted one last Russian sniper. The sniper aimed and hit his target, a successful headshot and the enemy force commander dropped dead.

The British withdrew all their remaining forces from the area and Russian armoured divisions rolled into Kiruna unopposed, securing all the alien objectives.

Back in the late 70s or early 80s, Duke Seifried evangelized the use of washes in painting miniatures. Once again he was ahead of his time. Lately, Dr. Phil Hendry has been doing something similar for Warlord Games with his use of Army Painter products and dipping. Now back in Texas there are really only two kinds of dip - one for sheep and one for the lower lip. I liked Phil's results, however, and decided to give it a shot with my US Armored infantry platoon.
