US Armored Infantry
Back in the late 70s or early 80s, Duke Seifried evangelized the use of washes in painting miniatures. Once again he was ahead of his time. Lately, Dr. Phil Hendry has been doing something similar for Warlord Games with his use of Army Painter products and dipping. Now back in Texas there are really only two kinds of dip - one for sheep and one for the lower lip. I liked Phil's results, however, and decided to give it a shot with my US Armored infantry platoon.

Light Machine Guns

Light machineguns were not widely distributed when World War II began; those armies that possessed them in quantity, usually at the squad level, had a significant firepower advantage early on.  This advantage having been noted by the end of the war almost every squad carried at least one or more of these weapons. Generally these squad weapons were mounted with a bipod and usually ammunition carried in a magazine of some sort. They were fired either standing or more accurately laying down

What the !? Miniatures

If you play a Weird War or horror game, one thing you need in copious quantities is zombies. Generally, the more putrid, falling apart, and gruesome the better. What the ?! Miniatures has come out with another set of figures that will assist in your zombie augmentation plans.

A Confused Free For All

The Story so far:

Parts of the German army "Nord" is garrisoned in a small mining town called Kiruna in the northern parts of Sweden. It's location above the polar circle makes it perfect for testing armour and Mecha prototypes in extreme cold so the Germans built their second largest armour factory called "Valhalla" just outside of town. Newly manufactured Mecha and Super heavy tank prototypes are sent to Kiruna on a regular basis from the Nibelungenwerk in the

Treasures From Trash - 1
My wife likes to laugh at me sometimes because I'm a "gamer." It's mainly a "Oh, here we go again" or "I can't believe this" kind of laugh normally accompanied by the rolling of her eyes. This, in turn, generally follows after I pull a piece of something out of the things going to or in the trash and exclaim "Hey, this would make a *great*..." (fill in your own noun here). Fortunately I have been wargaming since before I met her (and that was at 14...) so ...

Treasures From Trash - 2
Those of you who are in your 30s and above will remember the famous AOL cds that used to show up in everything from magazines and newspapers to cereal boxes. Many people found creative uses for them as you could find a replacement CD on almost any street corner. I thought that it would be an intriguing project to see what I could do with a single old CD, so here is part two of the terrain articles for this month.

Rated R
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

I generally don't go in for horror movies. Most of the time they are just excuses for juvenile attempts at humor based on gore. I picked this one up on the recommendation of one of the SOTR Forum regulars and have to say I enjoyed it immensely. I hope it becomes a financial success because I think it's that good a movie. (Wikipedia claims that the producers of the movie took out a 200K GBP mortgage to ...

Tiger Hunt

The mission:

An allied armoured unit is sent to scout the road ahead for a German Tiger tank that has been sighted in the area. Both sides are supposed to fight to death or until the enemy is destroyed, routed or in any other way unable to continue the fight.

Tamiya Weathering Kit and Mud Pen

I'll keep this one short. I do *not* like this product. OK, OK, I was wrong. After some suggestions from folks on TGN I pulled this review from the last issue so I could reconsider what I had done. The paltry directions Tamiya has included in the kit are no help at all so i went with what my gut told me in further experimentation.

US Battlesuits
Any good SOTR1949 commander knows that the battlefield is a dangerous place and anything they can do to gain an advantage is critical. In the US Army, commanders continually beat the drum to get Battlesuit support for their infantry units. In the company I am mobilizing, I have taken a unit of three.

The Atrocity Archives
I would like to thank Alan Wilkinson, known as Dreamthief on the SOTR1949 forums for suggesting this is a good book for weird war enthusiasts. This is a very campy, interesting approach to occult and WW2 topics and is worth reading.

The Hunt For Zero Point

This must have been a frustrating book to write but an interesting one to research. When I picked this up to read, I thought it was oriented along investigating what the Nazis had done on anti-gravity technology and "flying saucers." Much to my disappointment, the book covers  one man's search for an elusive technology.

Das Reich

One of the most conroversial issues surrounding WW2 is the nature of the SS and I want to get this out of the way first so we can focus on the book by James Lucas. I have seen people argue that the SS' role in the death camps was limited to a few radical, sick, fanatical (pick your adjective) and that the military arms of the SS were "merely" professional soldiers motivated by a devotion to country and Hitler. I have seen arguments that suggest that along with their jackboots, the

WW2 Infantry Assault Tactics

World War II Infantry Assault Tactics is one of the latest Osprey Elite series books. The author, Rottman, is a veteran who entered service in 1967 (a year before the Tet Offensive) and served in Vietnam in the 5th Special Forces Group. He also worked for the Army at the Readiness Training Center as a scenario writer. His resume indicates that he is well grounded in what he is talking about in this book and his experience comes through. In many places, the book reads similar to a Field

The Liberation Trilogy

An Army at Dawn
Day of Battle

Rick Atkinson

The books reviewed here form the first two volumes of Atkinson's Liberation Trilogy. Many years ago I had the opportunity to meet the author at a book signing at West Point, NY. I had picked up one of his books (Army at Dawn) for my father for Christmas. My father is a real character (retired psychologist, retired from the Army Reserves/National Guard, PhD, working as a security guard for a while at 70+ because he was bored!) and so I as

Volume 2: From the V-1 to the A-9: Unconventional short- and medium range weapons

Friedrich Georg

This is the second volume of Georg's work on Hitler's secret weapons (the title above is taken directly from the book!) Although the focus here is strictly on rockets and missles, there is necessarily some overlap with Volume 1 when he talks about delivery systems. Once again, Georg argues that c

Hitler's Miracle Weapons, Vol. 1
vol1.jpg Hitler's Miracle Weapons: Secret Nuclear Weapons of the Third Reich and Their Carrier Systems Volume 1: The Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine
Friedrich Georg

Hitler's Miracle Weapons: Volume 1(HMW1) is an intriguing book. Written by a hobbyist who was trying to flesh out the details for some of the more esoteric models he wanted to build (in particular the HE177) he discovered a number of discrepancies in the histories of the period and branched out on his research. Particularly intriguing wa...
