I generally don't go in for horror movies. Most of the time they are just excuses for juvenile attempts at humor based on gore. I picked this one up on the recommendation of one of the SOTR Forum regulars and have to say I enjoyed it immensely. I hope it becomes a financial success because I think it's that good a movie. (Wikipedia claims that the producers of the movie took out a 200K GBP mortgage to make it!)

Set in one of the seamy corners of the Balkans, the movie tells the tale of a scientist who has been hired by a commercial firm to investigate one of the firm's new property holdings. You can tell it's an evil capitalist business because they only communicate with those in the film through a chat program and are holding the scientist's family hostage.

The scientist hires a team of mercenaries to escort him to the site and protect him for a 48 hour job. Once on the site, however, things begin to go awry very quickly. Ray Stevenson makes a great burned out mercenary leader and he carries the film. The evil Nazi is... well... a real evil Nazi and has a surprise in store for the team.

Some of the things I liked about the movie:

  • the mercenaries are shown as normal people with some eccentricities and baggage, not as valiant hero-types
  • there's not a lot of gore and what is used adds to the story and to the suspense of the film
  • there's enough mystery behind the zombies to let your imagination run wild with what they must look like

This would be perfect for a scenario based in the SOTR universe! It's got all the good stuff - evil Nazis, firepower, weird science, and a setting that can be modeled pretty easily!

Back in the late 70s or early 80s, Duke Seifried evangelized the use of washes in painting miniatures. Once again he was ahead of his time. Lately, Dr. Phil Hendry has been doing something similar for Warlord Games with his use of Army Painter products and dipping. Now back in Texas there are really only two kinds of dip - one for sheep and one for the lower lip. I liked Phil's results, however, and decided to give it a shot with my US Armored infantry platoon.
